The dollar isn't going anywhere

WHAT: John Williams, head honcho at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reiterated that the US dollar is still the king of currencies with hardly any challengers in sight.

WHY: "The dollar remains the international reserve currency. The whole global financial system is still very reliant on it which is a good thing" Williams said at an event held by New York University.

Billionaires lend millions to keep crypto platform alive

WHAT: Winklevoss bros, Tyler and Cameron, stepped up during crunch time for their crypto exchange Gemini by digging into their billionaire pockets and ponying up $100 million in a loan facility to keep the exchange going.

WHY: The move came after Gemini had informally sought funding from outside investors in recent months without coming to any commitments. Venture funding for crypto startups has cratered following the collapse of FTX and slowdowns in the tech and crypto industry.

Faded, faded, faded...

WHAT: Goldman Sachs seems to be feeling pretty good about the banking system these days. In fact, they've gone ahead and released a research note saying that all the fuss about the system being in shambles has mostly "faded" away.

WHY: In its research note, Goldman cites slowing online Google searches since mid-March for regional banks perceived to be under stress, as well as the subjects of bank withdrawals and safety deposits. According to Goldman, such searches have fallen back to "roughly normal levels"

 WHAT: Big Pharma is coming together to make some noise! Over 300 biotech and pharmaceutical executives including the CEO of Pfizer Albert Bourla signed an open letter seeking the reversal of a judge's decision to suspend sales of the abortion pill mifepristone.

WHY: A US judge suspended the US Food and Drug Administration's two-decade approval of the drug, effectively banning sales while a case brought by an anti-abortion group continues in Northern Texas.

WHAT: The US Federal Trade Commission has some serious beef with the Intercontinental Exchange's plan to buy mortgage data vendor Black Knight and they're not messing around either! They've gone ahead and asked a federal judge to put a stop to the whole thing with a preliminary injunction.

WHY: The agency said the proposed transaction would mean higher fees, less innovation and fewer choices in the process of financing the purchase of a home.

No more Tupperware parties??

WHAT: Tupperware seems to be in a bit of a pickle. They've hired financial advisors to help them "improve their capital structure and remediate their doubts regarding their ability to continue as a going concern" TRANSLATION: They're in some serious hot water and need all the help they can to stay afloat!

WHY: Tupperware stock experienced a sizzling run-up during the first year of the pandemic, almost tripling in 2020, but as recently as November the company announced a "going-concern" about its future and reported disappointing earnings.
