๐ฐ US inflation meets expectations
๐ Our report: In the inflation arena, the consumer price index did a little two-step, shimmying up by 0.1% in November. Prices across a broad range of goods and services edged higher in November but were mostly in line with expectations, further easing pressure on the Federal Reserve.
๐ Key points:
In November, much cheaper gas held down overall prices, which rose just 0.1% from October, the government said. Compared with a year ago, inflation dipped to 3.1%, down from a 3.2% year-over-year rise in October.
The November numbers were still well above the Fedโs 2% target, though showing continuing progress.
Last monthโs inflation data arrived just a day before the Federal Reserve will end a two-day policy meeting and announce its latest decisions on interest rates. The Fed is expected to keep its key rate unchanged for the third straight time.
๐ก So what: Getting inflation under control is crucial for the U.S. economy. Inflation, when too high, erodes the purchasing power of money, making goods and services more expensive for consumers. Central banks, including the Federal Reserve in the U.S., aim to maintain price stability and moderate inflation to support sustainable economic growth.

๐ Global EV sales hit new record
WHAT: Global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) are on the rise, pulling a 20% power-up from last year! Sales of BEVs and PHEVs hit a fresh monthly record of 1.4 million units in November, up from 1.1 million in November 2022, according to market research firm Rho Motion.
WHY: After years of accelerating growth, some automakers fear that electric car sales in Europe and elsewhere could be heading for slowing demand as drivers wait for better, cheaper models that are two to three years down the road.
๐ค๐ฝ Media merger
WHAT: Liberty Media is orchestrating a financial remix that's catchier than your favorite song! They've decided to merge their majority stake in SiriusXM with the rest of the radio company, crafting a new publicly listed firm with a sleeker ownership structure. The move was first proposed by billionaire John Malone's media conglomerate in September.
WHY: Under the deal, former investors in Liberty SiriusXM Group or LSXM โ the conglomerate's tracking group for the radio company's stock โ would own 81% of the new company, while minority shareholders of SiriusXM would own the rest.
๐น Texas upholds TikTok ban
WHAT: In a Lone Star showdown, a federal judge in Texas gave the nod to the state's TikTok ban on official gadgets and networks, swatting away a challenge that was brought by an organization that claimed the restrictions violated the First Amendment.
WHY: Western governments have expressed worries that the popular social media platform, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, could put sensitive data in the hands of the Chinese government or be used as a tool to spread misinformation. In light of those concerns, dozens of states, Congress and many universities across the country have taken steps to restrict the use of TikTok on official devices.
