📉 IMF, Yellen weigh economic fall out from Gaza war
📝 Our report: US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and her colleagues at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are clear about one thing: the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has some massive implications for global economic growth prospects.
🔑 Key points:
The sudden outbreak of war in the Middle East added a further risk factor to a global economy already strained by increasing economic fragmentation.
IMF first deputy managing director Gita Gopinath said the war could hit the economy if it expanded.
Crude oil prices and safe haven currencies like the Japanese yen have risen alongside the Israeli-Palestinian standoff.
💡 So what: Geopolitical issues such as wars can complicate decisions by policymakers. Because of globalization, what happens in one part of the world can have spillover effects for other countries not directly involved (e.g. a spike in oil prices affects oil importing nations).
